NSF Graduate Research Fellowship (GRFP) Essay Workshops Tuesday 9/10, Wednesday 9/11, or Thursday 9/12, 5-7pm Graduate Student Center #305, 3615 Locust Walk In this workshop, graduate students will learn about the NSF GRFP personal statement and broader impacts expectations. Students will leave knowing what NSF is looking for and how to talk about their experiences in a way that highlights those characteristics in themselves. While this session will focus on those in the Natural and Physical Sciences, students from Social Sciences are also welcome to attend. Co-sponsored by the SAS Science Outreach Initiative, Center for Undergraduate Research & Fellowships (CURF), and Graduate Student Center. PhD Grant Programs Information Session Wednesday, September 11, 12:00-1:30 PM ARCH Building, 3601 Locust Walk, Fireside Lounge (2nd Floor) The University administers four grant programs for full time PhD students to help offset the cost of childcare and family expenses, and health insurance for dependents, dental insurance, and health insurance for students beyond funding years. Learn more about these grants and speak with representatives of the Office of the Provost, Family Center, and Graduate Center, who administer the programs. Lunch will be served. Please register at www.gsc.upenn.edu/events PD Soros Fellowship for New Americans Information Session with PD Soros foundation representative Nikka Landau Monday, September 16, 4:00 - 5:00 PM ARCH Building, Fireside Lounge (#200), 3601 Locust Walk Penn’s Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships (CURF) invites all graduate and professional school students (including Master's and PhD students) to an information session with a representative from The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans, which honors the contributions of immigrants and children of immigrants to the United States. Each year, the program invests in the graduate education of 30 New Americans — immigrants and children of immigrants — who are poised to make significant contributions to US society, culture, or their academic field. Each Fellow receives up to $90,000 in financial support over two years, and they join a lifelong community of New American Fellows. Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings Deadline for 70th Lindau Nobel Laureate Interdisciplinary Meeting: September 11 Deadline for the 7th Lindau Meeting on Economic Sciences: October 14 Once every year, around 30-40 Nobel Laureates convene in Lindau to meet the next generation of leading scientists: 600 undergraduates, PhD students, and post-doc researchers from all over the world. Participants need to be below 35 years of age, should have an excellent academic track record and at least one letter of recommendation, need to speak English fluently, and may not have participated before. Spencer Foundation Dissertation Fellowship Program Deadline: October 3 Provides individual fellowships to doctoral students at the dissertation stage and to scholars engaged in postdoctoral work. Both programs support research related to education and are administered by the National Academy of Education (NAEd). Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowships in the Humanities Deadline: October 15 The Wolf Humanities Center awards five (5) Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowships each academic year. Awards carry a competitive, full-time stipend as well as other benefits. Scholars spend one year in residence at Penn and teach one undergraduate course in addition to conducting independent research. Annual calls for applications open in late spring. NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program Deadlines: October 21-25, by field The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported STEM and social science disciplines who are pursuing research-based Master's and doctoral degrees at accredited United States institutions. Fellows are expected to become knowledge experts who can contribute significantly to research, teaching, and innovations in science and engineering. Google PhD Fellowship University Nomination Deadline: November 1 Recognizes outstanding graduate students conducting research in computer science and related fields. Open to current PhD students who will have completed two years and have at least two years remaining in their program in Fall 2020. PD Soros Fellowship for New Americans Deadline: November 1 The Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship supports New Americans (immigrants or the children of immigrants), who are pursuing a graduate degree in any field in the United States. The Fellowship provides up to $25,000 in stipend support, as well as 50 percent of required tuition and fees, up to $20,000 per year, for two years, for a total of up to $90,000 in student support. Social Science Research Council (SSRC) International Dissertation Research Fellowship Deadline: November 5 Supports up to 12 months of support to PhD students in the humanities and humanistic social sciences who are conducting dissertation research on non-US topics. Fellowship amounts vary depending on the research plan, with a per-fellowship average of $21,000. The fellowship includes participation in an SSRC-funded interdisciplinary workshop upon the completion of IDRF-funded research. Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program Deadline: November 19 Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) institutes provide fully-funded, 7-10 week group-based intensive summer language institutes for U.S. citizen Master ’s and Ph.D. students. Institutes are currently offered in in fourteen languages including Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Turkish, Hindi, and Urdu, at locations where the target language is widely-spoken. Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fund Fellowship University Nomination Deadline: December 2 Provides full tuition plus a stipend of $18,000/year to support students with outstanding character and ability who hold promise for achievement and distinction in their chosen fields of study. To be eligible, you must: be a U.S. citizen; demonstrate a need for financial assistance, and be pursuing a graduate degree in any recognized field of study in the humanities, social sciences, or natural sciences, including formal professional degrees. National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowships Deadline: December 6 Highly-competitive, 1-3 year fellowships awarded to applicants who will pursue a doctoral degree in, or closely related to, an area of DoD interest within one of their fifteen prioritized disciplines in science and engineering. Fellows receive full tuition & fees, a monthly stipend, and medical insurance allowance. Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellowship Deadline: December 10 Support the final year of dissertation writing and defense for individuals completing a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) or Doctor of Science (Sc.D.) degree. Fellows have demonstrated superior academic achievement, are committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level, show promise of future achievement as scholars and teachers, and are well prepared to use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students. Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship Deadline: December 17 Predoctoral fellowships provide three years of support for individuals engaged in graduate study leading to a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) or Doctor of Science (Sc.D.) degree. Fellows have demonstrated superior academic achievement, are committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level, show promise of future achievement as scholars and teachers, and are well prepared to use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students. Boren Fellowship University Endorsement Required. Campus Endorsement Deadline: January 13, 2020 Provides grants of up to $24,000 for 3-12 months of research and language study abroad, plus up to $12,000 for domestic language study prior to departure. Awards granted with preference for countries, languages, duration, and fields of study critical to U.S. national security. U.S. citizens only.
